Ellen Dixon Obituary

Ellen Dixon, 88, of Central Square passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. Ellen and her devoted, beloved late husband Don were natives of the Syracuse area and were residents of Central Square continuously since 1965. They were married in 1953 and shared a life of adventure and love until Don’s passing in 2021. Ellen was a vibrant and dynamic member of the Central New York community throughout her life. After being diagnosed and treated for breast cancer in 1982, she lobbied at the state and federal level to require insurance companies to cover post-mastectomy reconstructive surgery. She also supported other women
fighting breast cancer through Reach for Recovery. After the loss of her daughter Jeanee in 1987, she comforted and guided other grieving parents through HOPE for Bereaved. She was the Grand Matron of the Oneida Lake Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in the early 1970s. She worked as a licensed practical nurse at the Oswego County Health Center in Central Square after getting her nursing degree from SUNY Oswego in 1977 until her retirement in 1993. She was an avid gardener and reader, a wicked bridge player, a fierce Wii Sports competitor and a lover of travel and social events. Above all, Ellen was a pillar of strength and love to her entire family, who will miss her dearly.
Ellen is predeceased by her husband Donald, daughter Jeanee Herholtz and grandson Kiel Dudley. She is survived by her brothers Neal (Nancy), Raymond (Ginger) and Howard Scott; her sisters Barbara (Leon) Brinks and Marion (Richard) Graves; daughters Jo-Anne Wilson and Judi Dixon-Dudley (Ralph Placito); her son, Donald Dixon Jr. and her son-in-law Stephen (Beth) Herholtz; her grandchildren, Art (Desiree) Wilson Jr., Jacob (Jillian) Wilson, Amanda Dudley, Jeanee Dudley (Evan Walker), and Liz Dixon-Green; Ralph’s children Rachel (Greg) Spicola, Zac Placito and Matt (Mary) Placito; great-grandchildren Alaina, Jacob Jr., Ashlynn, Aspen and Evan Wilson and Avery and Bryson Spicola.
